The Charlotte Hornets began as the , a charter member of the  in 1974. Just before week 14 of that season, the team left the Big Apple and headed to North Carolina. The team drew a lot more fans down south and managed to make it to the WFL's second season. However, the Hornets, and the entire league, folded on October 22, 1975.
